Life in Prison for Aborted Suicide Attempt

While suicide is never an option for dealing with life’s problems, the least one could do is try not to injure or kill others in the process.

Juan Manuel Alvarez learned that the hard way when a jury said today he should receive life in prison without the possibility of parole for parking his SUV onto railroad tracks near LA three years ago in a suicide attempt, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Before the train hit, Alvarez jumped out of harms way when he had second thoughts, but his actions killed 11 and injured 180 others. He was found guilty last month.

According to the Times, prosecutors claimed Alvarez was not attempting to commit suicide, but rather seeking attention from his estranged wife. The defense described how Alvaraez was beaten as a child and was mentally unstable.
