Satire or Scornful?

Posted in Politics tagged , , at 12:07 am by Katharine Lackey

Today, the magazine New Yorker touched nerves with its new cover, meant to present a satire of the falsehoods that Republicans and other critics use against the presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama.

The cover, seen to the left, depicts Obama in traditional Muslim garbs in the White House with a framed painting of Bin Laden over the fireplace where an American flag is burning. Michelle and Barack are engaging in what one FOX news commentary called a “terrorist fist jab.”

New Yorker editor David Remnick, tells the Huffington Post“The fact is, it’s not a satire about Obama – it’s a satire about the distortions and misconceptions and prejudices about Obama.”

However, the problem, many charge, with the magazine cover is that a portion, albeit small, actually believes Obama is Muslim and that he intends to create some sort of Islamic state in America.

In a recent Newsweek poll, 12 percent of the respondents said they believe that Obama is a practicing Muslim and another 12 percent believe he “used a Koran for swearing into the U.S. Senate.

Both presidential campaigns condemned the cover today, with Obama’s side calling it “tasteless and offensive” and McCain saying it was “totally inappropriate.”

Others charge that it is also racist and both Republicans and Democrats seem to be generally opposed to the cover, although for varying reasons.

Some Republicans are afraid that by satirizing their position, the cover is portraying their side as “ignorant racists.”

I am not Republican or Democrat, but I think it is interesting that when Democrats are depicted in “tasteless” comics or scorned in interviews, the media jumps all over it, saying it is an outrage and completely “inappropriate.” However, if a Republican gets the same coverage, the media says how true it depicts the conservative politicians and no one can say that it is “inapropriate.” Because, if they do, they will be portrayed as liars, covering up their problems and mistakes. So, does this mean that Republicans are little devils dressed up in suits and ties while Democrats are little angels with invisable halos, being persecuted by their opposition? I am sick of the media perverting and twisting both sides of the spectrum, and I wish they would give all parties equal air time, letting viewers decides if they want to be Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, Green, Constitution, or whatever, instead of deciding for them.

The only reason that this Mr. & Mrs. Obama satire DOES have impact — and may very likely spread — is because like all good satire, or good humor for that matter, there’s more than a germ of truth in it. Otherwise, the satire would utterly roll off the Obamoids’ backs, having no impact.
